Why would energy consumption decline as economy recovers?

Gasoline and electricity consumption seem to be declining, at a time when, according to official statistics, the economy appears to be improving.  Many people are speculating about what it means, that gasoline deliveries are declining rapidly.

Similar declines are happening in the consumption of electricity.

Gasoline and electricity consumption have been, for decades, correlated with economic activity.  It would appear that the US economy is either weaker than anyone expected, or undergoing a structural transformation.

All the while, prices for both gasoline and electricity continue to rise.
